Inspiring the next generation of engineers at St Helens College

On 5 October, Kevin Diskin and Simon Young from Pentre Group spoke to engineering students at the STEM Centre, Technology Campus, at St Helens College.

The session was delivered to three cohorts enrolled on City & Guilds engineering qualifications, covering disciplines including welding, mechanical and electrical engineering. The aim of the visit was to inspire the next generation of engineers, outline the practical realities of a career in the sector and reflect on Pentre Group's ongoing partnership with the college.

During the talk, students heard about the career progression from a shop-floor apprenticeship to senior management. The presentation detailed the global scale of the industry, illustrating how everyday infrastructure relies on the reels, drums and spools manufactured across Pentre Group's four sites. It also highlighted the diverse technical and commercial roles required to run a manufacturing business, from CNC programmers and machine setters to quality engineers.

Pentre Group continues to invest in its workforce and currently employs apprentices across its fabrication departments. The group is actively hiring for new roles, including an engineering and maintenance apprentice at the Leigh site.
